Poached Pears

  • 1 ½ cups of red wine
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 navel orange
  • ¾ cups of sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 4 small ripe pears - quartered (peeled or unpeeled)

Combine wine, juices from the lemon and orange, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and cloves in a 4-quart saucepan.

Add pears and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 25 minutes.

Remove pears and extras. Return liquid to a simmer and heat until syrupy; about 15 minutes or until liquid is reduced by 2/3rds.

Pears and syrup by itself makes a very yummy dessert. Or, use as a topping on your favorite dairy free ice cream.
